Mead in Hungary: Bringing Europe’s Oldest Drink to the Heart of Central Europe
When we opened Hungary’s first webshop dedicated to meads in 2024, it felt like the culmination of a 15-year journey. My story with mead began all those years ago when I visited Poland and experienced the rich, golden taste of Polish meads for the first time. It was an unforgettable introduction to a drink deeply rooted in tradition, a drink that has been enjoyed by kings, warriors, and common folk for centuries (To be concrete: It was a glass of Kurpiowski from Apis).
When I returned to Hungary, I was eager to explore more, to uncover the treasures of this honey-based beverage. But to my surprise, there was hardly any mead to be found here. Hungary, despite its strong cultural ties to honey and its long history of winemaking, seemed to have overlooked this ancient drink. It was a gap I couldn’t ignore.
Seven years ago, I started wondering: what if I could be the one to introduce Polish meads to Hungary? What if I could connect our local honey-loving spirit with the rich mead traditions of Europe? That question became a mission, and today, our webshop, Pitny Kft., stands as a testament to that vision.
Our slogan, “European meads, Hungarian spirit,” reflects the essence of what we do. We’re not just selling meads; we’re building a bridge between Hungary and Europe’s vibrant mead culture. Currently, we proudly offer a curated selection of meads from both Polish and Hungarian producers. From the rich, full-bodied póltorak meads to the lighter, fruitier trójniaks, our collection caters to a wide range of tastes and preferences.
Apis is my first in many aspects. Their product was the first one I tried and they were our first partners on this journey. They are Poland’s and the world’s largest mead producer. With their century-old expertise and world-class quality, they set the bar high and helped us establish a strong foundation.
But this is just the beginning. By the end of 2025, we plan to expand our offerings to include meads from Austria and the Czech Republic (maybe Ireland or the United kingdom), further enriching the diversity of flavors available to our Hungarian customers. We want to ensure that anyone searching for Mead Hungary finds not only variety but also quality and authenticity.
